Society Of Market Technicians

The SMT Stock Focus Group meets monthly to discuss methods and tools used to select, analyze and trade stocks and mutual funds. We are a focus group of the Society Of Market Technicians, a non-profit educational organization dedicated to the technical analysis of financial markets.

Society Of Market Technicians (Washington DC Area) - This is the main group. Meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month.

Stock Group Special Interest Group - The Stock Focus Group highlights stock picking, individual analysis techniques and tools.

The Unruly Dog - This is the web site Dennis Kranyak, an SMT member, former Vector Vest user and now successful day trader. Dennis maintains useful charts and statistics. I've found his site to be very helpful and informative.

A Top-Down Value Oriented Trading Strategy (ppt)
November 3rd, 2005

This approach selects industry groups and subsequently stocks within these industry groups for trading or investing. The filtering criteria relies on valuation and fundementals (the "what" to trade) followed by the application of trading systems (the "when" to trade it). Equity curves and trading statistics provide additional information when selecting optimal trading systems.

Tools

SMT members use a diverse set of computer-based tools and approaches including Telescan, VectorVest, TC2000, Metastock, Ensign, Advanced GET, Optioninetics, Quotes Plus, AMIBroker and many many others. Here are the primary tools I currently use to analyze stocks and markets...

Quotes Plus

Quotes Plus is an EOD data source, charting and scanning package. I use QP3 mostly for Stock Picker Pro, one of the included packages, and the data source which includes comprehensive fundemental, pricing and other securities data. There is also a QP3 plugin for AMIBroker which means you can import QP data into AMIBroker with no redundancy. Quotes Plus also provides a plugin for Excel which is VERY useful to us Visual Basic programmers.

AMIBroker

AMI Broker is a charting and analysis program which provides stock screening, charting, system creation, optimization and backtesting capability. AMI Broker is available for download over the web and the demo version is free. The fully featured EOD version costs $129 with free updates for the next 5 major releases. The Real-Time version costs $199. That's quite a bargain compared to some other tools. I recommend joining the community mailing list where AMI Broker's developer, Tomasz, provides personal and timely support: AMIBroker is also included with Quotes Plus.
